Wheeler centre dating
Witness the vulnerability, thrills and heartbreak of the dating experience up close, as Bron Batten facilitates, interrogates and gleefully destroys the rituals of contemporary romance.
Featuring a different volunteer participant each night, Onstage Dating takes the fraught and intoxicating performance of modern courtship to the next level all in front of the audience.
In 2014 as part of its #discuss project, the Wheeler Centre asked some Australian radio makers to discuss the idea that ‘there are things you can do with radio that you could never do in music or writing alone’. Radio drama is the most liberating form a writer can work with.
It has all the immediacy of film and television (immersing the listener into the space of the work) along with the imaginative power of fiction (creating whole worlds in the audience’s head) and the movement of poetry (traversing real and non-real spaces to chase down ideas).
It also provides access to great collaborators – meaning higher quality productions – because it’s relatively cheap to create. Radio is in the air, waiting to be brought to life by the listener.
